Money Money Money Money
We sat on the couch looking at the check. We turned it over and then turned it over again. We didn’t want to act ignorant because the money was obtained based on a very sad situation - the death of his mother, but soon we couldn’t contain ourselves. At 25 and 27…$250K is ALOT of money.
Yea, at that age, RM and I came upon $250 gees, through a lawsuit filed on behalf of his mother’s wrongful death at a hospital. They (his brother and him) won $500K and split it 50-50.
At the time we were living in Jersey City in a nice two story home. We had a great back yard and I loved the hardwoods throughout. Basically the ‘apt.’ was four rooms separated by glass doors. I would have wished for (1) another bathroom and (2) more design on the way the rooms were organized, but we liked it. We both worked and played in the city, which was a hop and a skip away on the Path train. We were childless and it was going good.
There is no rhyme or reason to the rest of this story and I really just chalk it up to being young and stupid. There are alot of spotchy spots in this story and you might wanna chalk up the CHUNKS of missing data on where the money went to young and stupid. I still get a lump in my throat when I think about it.
The very first thing we did after depositing the check and getting some nice smiles and treatment at the bank, was to both turn in our resignations. Yea we quit our jobs. We both had an aversion to working (lol) and had all this convo of school etc. etc. (yea ok). Next up was that we got our selves back in the good graces of every bill and creditor we had at the time, which actually didn’t take alot - at the time we were pretty astute on our bills.
We next PARTIED HARDY! We lived in NYC folks! We were the party starters. We took hoardes of folks out on the town, making it rain as we drank and partied. The wardrobes needed to be UPGRADED. I remember literally just throwing away most of what I had (except for my shoes I always had nice shoes - even if I had cheap ass clothes, lol) and redoing our strut.
Then the Charity work began. Especially from my side. I righted a whole lot of folks personal wrongs etc. SIGH. Negroes just begging and begging.
Is that a brand new Motorcycle and a new Acura right off the lot with the plastic still on the seats paid for in cash? Is the USP man showing up EVERYDAY with packages from QVC. Emeralds, Diamonds, Ruby’s, and a budding doll collection? Was J&R Music world dancing in the aisles as thousands were spent on musical equipment for the new home studio? Yes that was a check for $13,598 (cause I remember that) to IKEA to outfit the home? Camcorders, Cell Phones, Cameras, 52 inch televisions - yea bring it all in.
We had planned a trip to Egypt, but ended up going in a 10 day cruise. Landed in Orlando and decided, hey we dont’ have any jobs. Checked into a fancy hotel and stayed there a week - going to every park, enjoying fine food, buying stuff for folks, drippin in all of our new jewelry and watches…just straight trippin.
So notice I haven’t said we bought any property, any stocks, any bonds, any CD’s, anything that would carry us forward…..
I can’t even tell you where the rest of that money went. We took like two years off from work, never did go to school or anything - so our living expenses took up alot of it. The rest is really just a blurr.
What I would do if I ever got the chance to get that money again…Lesson Learned!
Postscript: 75% of my current home is filled with the furniture from IKEA. The stuff is good. I have a very very nice jewelry collection that I enjoy on the daily. I ended up selling the Acura when he passed. The musical equipment was bequeathed to his cousin in Cali, the big screen went to his brother, the motorcycle got stolen by the man down the street, the folks we lent money too were ungrateful as hell and life goes on.

Pam, please write a book, because (1) you are a gifted writer, and (2) you have a lot of experiences to draw from such as this one referred to in this entry.

Great post! But I get the feeling that was the really short and really low version. I’d love to hear it all sometime. Even if it took you a few months.

A friend of mine received her inheritance (I think it was around $100K) when she turned 18. She went on spending binges out da ass….spankin brand new car (a sebring, this is when they first came out and the sucka was sharp!), clothes, clothes, clothes, and a lot of other uneccessary stuff. We still laugh about it to this day…….but I mean she was young and didn’t really have that influence to tell her what she should/shouldn’t have been spending $$$ on…..not that it would have stopped her but still.
